dc.description Muammar Qaddafi rose to power in 1969 following a coup that overthrew King Idris and established Qaddafi as the de facto leader of Libya. In the years that followed Qaddafi was linked to international terrorist attacks, assassination attempts, and the subversion of neighboring states. In 1985 members of the Abu Nidal terrorist organization, acting with the sanction and support of the Libyan leader, carried out attacks at airports in Vienna and Rome that killed 19 people. In response President Reagan imposed severe economic sanctions on Libya and ordered all Americans living in Libya to return home, leading to speculation that further military action might be taken against Colonel Qaddafi. In this episode Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen and Arnaud de Borchgrave of the Washington Times join host Peter Krogh to discuss the United States' options for dealing with Qaddafi. Will economic sanctions be enough to force Qaddafi to abandon his patronage of international terrorism, or will further action be necessary? en_US
