Rev. Joseph Mosley, SJ was born in Lincolnshire, England, on November 16,1731. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1748, after having received an education at St. Omers, France. In 1758 Fr. Mosley went to Maryland, where he worked in missions to Charles Co. and St. Mary's Co. In 1765 he founded the Mission of St. Joseph's in Talbot Co. on Maryland's Eastern Shore. It was in the service of St. Joseph's that he died, on June 3, 1787. While serving in Maryland, Fr. Mosley wrote a number of letters describing various aspects of life in Southern Maryland and on the Eastern Shore. The sixteen letters which comprise this collection --fifteen of which Fr. Mosley sent to his sister, and the remaining one of which he sent to his brother, Michael Mosley , SJ -- are full of details not only on the state of local society, but on the flora and fauna of the area.
