    Description
Joe Keenan, a New York City police officer, recalls with great detail and emotion how he served during the rescue and recovery efforts after September 11, 2001, first at the Family Assistance Center in Manhattan and finally at the Fresh Kills Landfill in Staten Island. He talks to families for days on end as they search for their loved ones. At Fresh Kills he visually and manually searches the piles of gray debris for any possible forensic remains. Joe bears the emotional and physical consequences of his work when he develops upper respiratory disease. Yet his sense of humor, dedication to his work and his family survive. Joe finally decides to retire, sparing his wife new worries. With pride Joe announces that his daughter continues the family tradition and joined the New York City Police Force.
