    Person Interviewed
    Courtney, Larry
    Description
Larry Courtney lost his life partner Gene on September 11, 2001. This sudden and tragic loss came on the heels of Larry's emotional journey following his divorce, coming out as a gay man, geographic distance from his children and his new life with Gene. Four years after Gene's death Larry is puzzled that he is not "further along" in his grief. His adult children reach out to him and ask him to return to California, to be nearer to them. With his use of exquisite words and life affirming metaphors Larry allows the viewer to understand the essence of grief and how it affects our lives. He recalls the words of his grandfather who reminded him that the wound of loss turns into a scar, less painful but nevertheless present in our lives. Through the support of his children Larry learned to look forward to the future, to be with people who care for him and to live with hope and optimism in his faith community.
