dc.description.abstract | In order to provide a better understanding of the current internal conflicts and political national identity of Sudan, this thesis examines the historical process of Islamization and Arabization of the region. It argues that most scholars have overlooked the role that Sudanese proto-national identity plays in shaping the current national identity. Furthermore, it argues that it is important for scholars of Sudanese nationalism to take into account medieval texts to further understand the roots of North-Central Sudan’s nationalism. This thesis analyzes three main aspects of Sudanese proto-nationalism through an analysis of Tabaqat Ibn Dayfulla. It analyzes three main themes in the text; religion, genealogy and language. | en-US |
