Abstract
The Bioethics Thesaurus was developed at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics (KIE) at Georgetown University to serve as a controlled subject heading vocabulary for indexing literature relevant to the cross-disciplinary field of bioethics, a branch of applied ethics that is concerned with the value implications of practices and developments in the life sciences, health care, medicine, and related areas of research. Since October 2009, the Thesaurus has been expanded to incorporate new subject headings pertinent to indexing the Islamic Medical and Scientific Ethics (IMSE) Database, a joint project of the KIE’s Bioethics Research Library (BRL) at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and the Georgetown School of Foreign Service Qatar Library (SFS-Q).
Description
The Bioethics Thesaurus was developed at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics (KIE) at Georgetown University to serve as a controlled subject heading vocabulary for indexing literature relevant to the cross-disciplinary field of bioethics, a branch of applied ethics that is concerned with the value implications of practices and developments in the life sciences, health care, medicine, and related areas of research. Development of the Thesaurus was funded by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), and it was used to index an NLM database, BIOETHICSLINE, from 1975 to 2000, when BIOETHICSLINE was absorbed into NLM’s large MEDLINE database. The Thesaurus was then expanded, with funding from 2000 to 2011 from the U.S. National Human Genome Research Institute, to incorporate additional subject headings relevant to ethical, legal, and social aspects of genetics. Funding for this project was provided by a three-year $1,050,000 grant from the Qatar National Research Fund.
