Description
In this interview, Sivagami "Shiva" Subbaraman speaks with Ben Telerski (C '23) about his experience working at the LGBTQ Resource Center while a student at Georgetown University. Much of the conversation focuses on the perceptions of students about the Center, especially after it first opened, and how it wasn’t necessarily seen as a safe space at first. Subbaraman describes the efforts she made to get students comfortable in coming to the Center, even for reasons unconnected to LGBTQ issues, and details the various programming she initiated to raise not only the visibility of the Center but also the visibility of LGBTQ students on campus. Telerski and Subbaraman go on to discuss what the future looks like for the Center in trying to build and sustain programming and partnerships and the possible need to reinvent itself due to the impact of COVID-19 on some of the Center’s regular activities.
