Correspondence related to St. Joseph's Church, including documents related to claims by Father Michael Slattery that Father Clarke took income from the land purchased for the church (108R6-108R8) ; the purchase of a house for Black nuns; and the foundation of St. Francis Xavier Church as a church for Black congregants and then the transfer of the church to the Josephites (108R10-108R27): Letter (Dec. 20, 1864) of Sr. Mary Innocent concerns removal of sisters from St. Peter's Church; Receipt (1865) of Rev. Michael Slattery contains note by Joseph Zwinge, S.J., on reverse side concerning the charge of St. Joseph's Church in Baltimore; Letter (Sept. 13, 1864) of Rev. Slattery to Angelo Paresce, S.J., mentions purchase of a house for Black nuns; Decision (1865) of Archbishop Martin J. Spalding in case of St. Joseph's Church and the Society of Jesus; Receipts; Letter (Aug. 25, 1863) of H.B. Bloskery, Administrator for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, grants permission for Jesuits to establish St. Francis Xavier Church [Baltimore] for Black Catholics; Letter (Jan. 20, 1864) to Fr. Bloskey from the Propagation of Faith; Letters (1871-1875) between Joseph E. Keller, S.J., Herbert Vaughan, Bishop of Salford [England] and James R. Bayley, Archbishop of Baltimore in regard to keeping or giving up the Black church in Baltimore in possession of the Josephites.
