Description
While there are mechanisms to ensure equity in biomedical studies, there is still not a realistic representation of the current population being considered for study. More specifically, individuals may be systematically excluded from participating in trials based on factors such as race and sexual orientation. Prior findings identified low minority participation in clinical trials, systematic concerns which could impact published health outcomes for certain groups, limited established mechanisms of accountability for not complying entirely with inclusionary research mandates, low continuity for studies focusing on participation in health related studies and persisting barriers based on low trust for the medical a community within minority communities. A current literature review under the Georgetown Gender+ Justice Initiative proposed that as attitudes towards research change, community centered models and reducing barriers for participation proved successful in recruiting minorities. This workshop/working group will allow individuals to build upon the concepts suggested by the research board to discuss barriers to study participation, resolving said barriers and proposing working models for future researchers to implement into their study framework to maximize diversity by utilizing a group case study evaluation approach. _____ Handouts https://www.wcgirb.com/insights/making-clinical-research-inclusive-strategies-to-include-the-lgbtqia-community-in-research-trials/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3222419/ https://www.clinicalleader.com/doc/practical-ways-to-increase-diversity-in-clinical-trials-0001
