Description
IDST 112 Wellbeing in Times of Crisis; The Applied Science of Flourishing This one credit course was designed in request for proposals by the Red House in summer 2020 to help balance the curriculum workload for students. It is a popular course that has been taught by Carol Day and Sarah Stiles in Fall 2020 and Fall 2021. This course is a modified version of the popular 3 credit SOC 111 course, Flourishing in College and Community. The MH of this generational cohort has been more negatively impacted by the pandemic than most others. While there is nothing we can do about having a pandemic in our lifetimes, there are actions we can take to lessen the trauma and develop resilience. In the course we acknowledge the trauma, both personal and in the larger society, and expose students to scientifically proven practices they can do to care for themselves and others. Discussion, reflection, and experiential learning form the teaching and learning methods built into the course. Students apply basic evidence based practices like gratitude journaling, establishing a sleep routine, and paying attention to nutrition. Students read about the remarkable power of relationships, optimism, and belonging in well-being. Experiential modules on laughter, creativity, and nature therapy are included. Various types of meditation are introduced and practiced throughout the course. Final student reflections overwhelmingly indicate the positive impact that students feel about the content and the application of these important practices in their lives.
