Description
Preparing students for meaningful lives and work lies at the heart of the Jesuit mission. However, it can be difficult to create space for conversations around purpose and vocational discernment while also balancing curricular and departmental goals and needs. The current workplace and graduate school landscape requires students to translate their academic and co-curricular experiences into a narrative that proves their worth and skillset, and students often struggle to do this in a compelling and authentic way. Faculty and student-facing staff can have a profoundly helpful influence on the way students translate their experiences, and, conversely, not having career conversations with students can cause them to assume their major is equal to their career (which we know is not the case) or prevent students from being exposed to the myriad of pathways and options available to them. Our goal at the Cawley Career Education Center is to help faculty and staff across campus feel more equipped and empowered to have conversations with students around meaningful lives, work, and translating their experiences to life after Georgetown. To do this, we are focused on building a campus-wide ecosystem to promote greater sense of purpose among students. In this Panel, we offer a facilitated dialogue among faculty and staff who have demonstrated success in navigating conversations about vocation and purpose with students. Join us to be a part of this dialogue and learn about resources and tools to create space for holistic vocational discernment in your work with students. Let's teach students how to think and how to apply what they are learning towards their life after the hilltop.
