Description
During this Panel, we wanted to share out lessons learned in nearly the past 2 years in launching and organizing the Spaces and Places for Advocacy & Racial Justice Knowledge (SPARK) at GUMC. SPARK aims to bring students, faculty, staff together at GUMC by providing spaces to process current events, accelerating understanding around systemic racial inequities that pervade our country, developing skills for allyship, and committing to actions around advancing racial equity within our community. In our panel, we will focus on the different spaces we created to unify our siloed campuses online across the medical center and MedStar including: A year-long Anti-Racism Book Club with over 100 members of GUMC participating and reading 4 books together online in diverse large group and smaller affinity group discussion breakouts. Healing circles & community support circles. These monthly affinity groups are co-sponsored by The Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion & the GUMC Racial Justice Committee for Change Subcommittee on URM Wellbeing, Experience & Responsiveness with the intent to provide confidential, safe, and brave spaces for affinity groups to share their experiences and harvest collective wisdom as they process current events. Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression Programming and Events partnered with other departments to equip participants with skills and knowledge for personal and professional development to address racial inequities and learn more cultural competency.
