Subseries 2.2: Correspondence, 1833-1967
Browse by
This subseries consists of correspondence related to the Province’s property, finances, and the office of the Provincial Procurator. While the Province generally retained few of the letters sent by the Provincial Procurator himself, those letters that do survive, located in this subseries, provide insight into the Province’s handling of financial and property-related matters, including the purchase, treatment, and sale of enslaved people.
These letters are, therefore, especially important in documenting the Province’s sale in 1838 of 272 enslaved individuals, including payments from their purchasers Henry Johnson and Jesse Batey. Letters dated 1833-1835 and 1839-1845, recorded in two letterbooks, address expectations of servants, the sale of land, and relations with tenants, in addition to the 1838 sale. Joseph Zwingé, S.J. (Procurator from 1903 to 1920) also used the blank pages in the second letterbook to record letters sent regarding capital improvements, particularly investments in land and buildings, from 1883 to 1908. The subseries also contains letters from loose papers organised by the Provincial related to farms owned by the Corporation of Roman Catholic Clergymen, including published epistles written in Latin and English (1858-1900), letters sent to the Provincial by Zwingé (1908-1920), correspondence and a survey related to Provincial property disputes and improvements, and correspondence between Francis Breen,S.J. and the Reverend Constantino Cassaneti.
Some materials in this subseries contain references to slavery, slaveholding, and enslaved individuals. Some materials in this subseries address the Province's 1838 sale of 272 enslaved individuals. Relevant folders are noted in the finding aid.
NOTE: Most materials dated 1900 and later have not been digitized. Materials dating 1900-1939 are available for research use at the Booth Family Center for Special Collections. All materials dated 1940 and later are restricted. Most Recent Submissions
