Description
Holograph letter from C.[ornelius] M.[urphy] [Cork], to 'a chara dhil' (Hagan). Stating that he returned safely, having seen Dr. A.[migo] on his way back; the latter is anxious to do good, understanding that England needs to stop meddling, and fearing a letter could be issued. Things are worse again in Ireland, Constance is now in Cork jail and a letter campaign to Cardinal G.[asparri], the hierarchy and government was to little avail though Dr. O'Dea's reply was more positive. Enclosing letter about his bad treatment by Free State troops for distribution in Rome (not extant). The Free State was forced to seize the Daily Mail this morning. Metaphorical remarks about an impending last effort to be made before April. An 'amnesty stunt' is tried again to have irregulars surrender by 18 February; Liam Deasy had given in under the strain of imprisonment and called on his fellows to do likewise- 'the meanest thing yet'. (sarcastically) The destructive rabble causing destruction throughout the country is misled to believe they can win despite the expressions of disapproval in the hierarchy's Lenten pastorals. Asking his and Dr. Curran's prayers. In deep gratitude for his kindness during the sojourn in Rome.
