dc.description | Typescript letter signed R.[oughneen], Kiltimagh (County Mayo), to Hagan. Since the letter has appeared he expects there will be a lengthy discussion over the next issues; he is restrained from participating himself. He found that the Bishop of Southwark 'has got a thorough grip of the situation', disliking the mission. It would be obvious that the cardinal and bishops had had no say, were a nuncio sent. '...what odds on Cyr? Could not there be pressure from this side? It would be a pity to entangle him with this rotten mess, as he is not likely to be thought [indispensable] if he comes up against the "big four"'. Reporting that the spouse of 'our friend' was found, a Mrs. S.[tanislaus] H.[ughes], that they had married in a Registry Office, were divorced, and that there is no trace of the groom. Remarking that the fifth soldier of the parish was buried, and his father's sentiment that '"sure the rotten country is not worth fighting or dying for"' is gaining currency. 'Sister Kay' [Keohane] at Gill's passes on the message that in a year's time the republic will be in full swing; adding his own strong reservations. Family matters; his bishop wishes him to take up a position of responsibility in Brighton in the autumn. He will correspond with Southwark concerning 'the missioner'. Greetings to the other clergy who are awaiting 'with pleasure the arrival of the organ of pure Cawthawlicism'. | |
