Description
Copy typescript [draft] letter from (Hagan) to Cardinal [Sbarretti]. Having heard that in the matter of the vacant see of Galway his own name was not only put on the terna, but that despite his representations some votes were cast for him, he lists five reasons rendering that appointment 'unwelcome and unacceptable'. Listing his lack of ambition for the mitre; his health; his lack of Irish, the inadvisability of introducing an outsider; and arguing that were he to join the body of Irish bishops his disapproval of their withdrawal of sacraments to republicans would place him in opposition to them. In his present position he has been bound by duty and delicacy to refrain from manifesting his misgivings in the matter. Asking the cardinal as the College's protector to acquaint Cardinal DeLai with these arguments.
