Two holograph letters from P.E. Magennis, Convento de Vocaciones de PP. Carmelitas, Olot (Gerona), (Spain), and Colegio de Nostra Señora del Carmen, Hinojosa del Duque (Córdoba) (Spain), to (Hagan). Sketching the welcome given to him by religious, civic authorities, and military. Praising the country where 'the people are like what we ought to be'. Canice (O'Gorman) ought to have come when 'reigning'- he would have enjoyed the incense. Observing that religious and seculars are unusually closely linked in a kind of comradeship that he likes very much. Commenting on Irish elections; clergy in Ireland obviously backed the wrong horse. He set a Spaniard's view of Ireland right, observing that DeValera is the most conservative of politicians and that the result is not a sign of anti-clericalism. However, he is cautious to interpret what it means to religion since it has been so closely associated with the Free State. Expecting to return to Italy by 26 (September); after the chapter he will be visiting convents. He had 'no idea we were so numerous here'. Also commenting on changes in Stephen O'Mara, whom he met in Genoa: 'the prison will destroy most of these men.' 24 August-11 September [1923]
