dc.description | Holograph letter from P.E. Magennis, Jerez de la Frontéra (Spain), to (Hagan), in thanks for his letter. Commenting on the false representations of [the Irish election results] by the press, including 'their agent in Madrid'. However, it is encouraging that those he encounters are easily persuaded otherwise and in favour of DeValera; hatred of England is very great, especially in the country people. Also he has been given great receptions because of his nationality – 'once we get mixed up with the Saxon all the glamour is gone from us...' He was sorry but not surprised by 'the Cardinal in petto'; some people do not learn their lessons and do not draw the right conclusion from more than half of their fellow-countrymen of the same religion. Commenting the letter in the Bulletin was very bitter and that he was sorry for Johnny O'Curran. Reference to 'the Colonel' who would not try to improve on the editorial. Finally observing that there are many more (in Spain) than he knew; this is really a three months' job. | |
