Description
Typescript letter signed Séamus Ua Ceallaigh (J. Kelly), Dunedin (New Zealand), in gratitude for his letter. Commenting that the Archbishop is fighting H.W.C. [Cleary] fiercely in Rome. While their own ordinary [Whyte] did his part for the Tablet, he also placed a most sycophantic article in it on the Otago Daily- asking for advice how to treat him. Some remarks about Whyte's treatment of John and James Lynch; Kelly gave them good write-ups in the Tablet for their pioneer work which Whyte resented. The paper has become quite restrained politically since Whyte came. Blaming Liston for the latter's change of attitude; Liston is 'a conceited and vain little tyrant'. Generally positive remarks on Whyte's character and past dealings with him. Kelly will act on Hagan's advice and 'make the most of him'. Then sketching his travel plans, beginning after the archbishop's jubilee celebrations next year. Observing that 'the enemy in Sydney is indeed regarded as a joke'; he has had some amusing exchanges with him. Asking if the jubilee number reached him. Asking for information about Fr. Capere, acting for the archbishop. The latter has portrayed C.[leary] as a man unfit to control a Catholic newspaper; Kelly is contentedly looking on. News from Sr. (Mary) de Sales; O'Connor.
