dc.description | Typescript letter with few handwritten insertions from 'Sr. Mary Michael' [E.R. Morrissey] [Dublin], to 'my dear Sister' (Hagan), (mostly in code). He has not met 'H.' [...] yet since his return. Stating that the novice he is interested in is from the west – the one Hagan knows will probably not last. Observing that 'the last effort of Mother General [DeValera] was as mad a stroke as ever took place in any Community, and has ruined her cause' – resignations are common now. Then commenting (using another voice) on the Loan- 'Larkin's failure to injure the Government was a great blessing'; the 'misguided Irregulars' return home sadder men- they ought to have called an end to the hunger-strikes when the 'good old Cardinal' wrote the letter. Then remarking that the 'Visitators' [...] took an interest in the novices but obviously could not do much - Mother General's contract was too big, suggesting that 'Mother James & Co.' [Cosgrave and government] should step aside. Now the latter have a new lease. Then commenting at length about his pet novice who deserves a rest after her recent retreat [hunger-strike]; she is now studying Latin. Morrissey is studying for the upcoming exams but has little motivation. Some comments about likely appointments in the clergy. | |
