Description
Holograph letter from Bishop E. Mulhern, Ardmaine, Newry (County Down), enclosing cheque for the Kearns burse and a tax refund; commenting on the dividends as affected by ‘the Boundary Squabble’. Then observing that the new Bishop of Clonfert ‘made speedy use of the gifts of the Holy Ghost’, and that ‘prophecy is a dangerous one to try in public’. Could not attend Dr. Gogarty’s consecration in Dublin. Again regretting he has no students to send to Rome; the seniors are going to the Chinese Missions. Wondering about Hagan’s plans for the new College; hoping the obstacles mentioned cannot thwart the whole transaction. Enclosing a sum for two of the recent petitions for donations to the Vatican- including the mallet to be presented to Pius XI. Then observing that there were no local government elections – ‘all our people holding aloof, though all here in S. Down (and) S. Armagh could have secured majorities in spite of all efforts to put us down’. Inviting him for a visit since at least there is no danger anymore as in the past.
