    Description
Typescript letter with handwritten addition from Seán T.(Ó Ceallaigh), 91 St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin, to Hagan. Surprised that Hagan's plans to meet P.T. [Keohane] were changed. Then remarking that Hagan's account of the fight, in his letter of 1 July, is thrilling: 'I can well imagine what you have been up against but I am also satisfied that you won't be beaten no matter who goes down'. Glad that things have improved since the Vice [Curran] left Rome. Stating he will be more free with regards to holidays when DeValera comes out; it is impossible to say whether the rumours of his imminent release hold true: 'if and when he does come out we are all very optimistic as to the change that his activities will bring about in public opinion'. DeValera might have to first address the problem surrounding McGrath and others who are trying to reenter 'the straight Republican path'. Believing that such an attempt may well lead to a split because of McGrath's past role in the Military Intelligence Department. Glad that Hagan overcame a certain big difficulty. – Adding that M.B.[...] and he had a long talk; favourable remarks about changes in him. Hoping Hagan will be able to leave Rome in August with an easy mind. Gibbons has not delivered his message yet. He surmises that McGrath bringing over [Devoy] is part of a plan to reunite the republican forces. A trustworthy source states that the prisoners are to be released within the next two days. Reiterating that there 'is sure to be a big revival of Rep.[ublican] sentiment with Dev's reappearance.' Making great efforts, they hope to start publishing their daily paper at the end of the year.
