Holograph letter from M.J. Browne, Westport (County Mayo), to (Hagan). Having met Seán T. he found him well and quite optimistic. DeValera is very busy, having to side-track holiday plans. He met a nun, a mutual acquaintance, at the Tranquilla convent. At Maynooth he met diverse people, all well informed on the Irish College-Bisleti affair and all indignant over it. Joking they will burn Paddy McSweeney at the stake as a heretic, having published an article by Leen C. S. Sp. on the doctrine of the Mass: while the bishop reacted mildly, Waters and others came down heavily. Then observing that the republicans are lacking in organisation, but that their spirit will improve greatly over the next week; at least the candidate for north Mayo ought to be finalised. Finding the clergy very mute in terms of politics; confused by the army mutiny. The bishops remain split; Dr. [Dignan] showed strong fearlessness at the general meeting. Dismissive of clergy's belief that 'the Vatican with shrewd foresight will now appoint only Republican bishops'. Good wishes for his health and a certain other matter. In thanks for a memorable year.
