Letter from Bishop William Codd to Hagan
Pontifical Irish College
Hagan, John, 1873-1930
Holograph letter from Bishop William Codd, Wexford, to Hagan, in reference to Fr. Sweetman's school and the Benedictine house at Gorey. Quoting at length from a letter from Sir Thomas Esmonde who protests he made no efforts in favour of Sweetman. The Esmondes in fact once withdrew their son from the school; Codd finding room for diverse interpretation in the letter. Marquis McSwiney was also said to have interested himself in Mount St. Benedict. Hagan is to share this information with Fidecicchi. More details about strategy; he is overall hopeful in the matter. There might be a way for the Benedictines to leave without financial loss.
