Description
Holograph letter from M.J. Browne, Westport (County Mayo), to (Hagan), with heartiest congratulations on resolving the struggle with his 'mail-gurt enemies'; much attention had been directed to that issue. He and the archbishop did not meet Curran in the end. The Tailtean Games were 'a wash-out'; people seem to have acted on DeValera's 'dignified letter of aloofness'. The northern question arouses strong emotions, as evidenced by Johnson's speech. The divorce question brews 'deep and dark' trouble: 'the bishops may yet assist in the unseating of their canonized government, unless the Catholic Bulletin is kind enough to develop its solution more fully for them'. Interestingly, Cosgrave quoted General Mulcahy in his panegyric on Collins. The President is gathering up the skeins and looks forward to the return of the young priests as a step on the road to victory. Others meanwhile are deeply suspicious of the clergy as a recent incident in the I.R.A. shows. The clergy take opposition as a form of "'bolshie”-ism’; also commenting on new books published by the literary movement which are usually hostile. Stating that (the Archbishop of) Tuam is in good health and very interested in St. Agatha; it is uncertain if he comes ad limina next year.
