Description
Holograph letter from M.J. Browne, St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth (County Kildare), to (Hagan). He gave the enclosure to Canon Joseph Walsh, urging him to help the letter writer, nephew of the late Canon McHugh, Carna; discussing the case where large charitable bequests were made and relatives of the deceased are in trouble. Commiserating on Hagan's drawn-out battle with Bisleti; many argue that Irish archbishops should go out themselves to assert their right. Brief comment on the way income tax arrears were collected; Hagan's young friend says nothing on this. Then commenting that among the students – reflecting wider society – the Irish language movement collapsed and that discussions of national questions are frowned upon: 'it is a symptom that the conductor of the retreat Fr. Fegan S.J. found it useful and even possible to insist strongly that Emmett the best of patriots died an atheist.'
