Description
Handwritten copy by [...] for [Hagan] of the bishops' statement following their general meeting on 8 January. Original signed by Archbishop and Primate Patrick O'Donnell, Bishop Robert Browne of Cloyne and Bishop Thomas O'Doherty of Galway. Stating that with regard to the Christian Brothers' schools coming into the national system, the bishops do not see a necessity to modify the papal decree of 1897. The Free State [as former administrators] usually take into account the disciplinary arrangements of religious denominations. But pointing out that each of these free schools is subject to the, normally parochial, trustees they are vested in. (Seemingly only sent 7 February; see letter from Bishop Foley of that date.)
