| dc.description | Holograph letter from Fr. J.F. Sweetman, Mount St. Benedict, Gorey (County Wexford), to Hagan, in thanks for the trouble he has taken. Stating his only hope of saving the school is for American or German Benedictines to take it over; despite his personal politics, Desmond Fitzgerald and McNeill would assist such a transfer. It is obvious that Downside is secretly pleased the school is shut down, and ostensibly so, by Rome. Enclosing printed copy of the evidence (not extant) – the actual military and episcopal charges are only hinted at. Also enclosing copy of his own typescript report for the Abbot of Downside of Canon Lee's visit and an added postscript, attesting to Lee's very narrow lines of enquiry and to the burning of a document with recriminations against Sweetman.
