Description
Typescript letter with handwritten addition signed Seán T.(Ó Ceallaigh), Poblacht na hÉireann, Irish Republican Headquarters, 3East 42nd Street, New York (United States of America), to Hagan. He heard that the suggestion agreed on between the chief (DeValera) and himself was not acceptable to the majority, more so at the meeting of the T.D.s even than at the ardfheis. He believes that the decision to make no pronouncement as to any change was influenced by the critical situation over the Boundary Commission; the troubles of the Free State encouraged a strong stance; further possibilities inherent in the situation. Their two American organisations are flagging, though enthusiasm might be generated from the prison escapes and the Armistice Day proceedings. Some remarks on the recent pilgrimage and their toll on Hagan; he saw that he kept a low profile unlike for instance Canice (O'Gorman). Fr. Power crossed to America with him; describing his unkind treatment in Rome. Commenting admiringly on (Archbishop) Mannix's speeches in Dublin. Glad that Armagh [receives the cardinalcy], not Dublin. Asking how (the Bishops of) Killaloe and Dromore behaved while staying together at the College; the Independent correspondent expressed the attention given him during his stay. Adding congratulations to the General (Magennis).
