Description
Three typescript drafts, all with handwritten emendations (two by O'Donnell, one by [Hagan]) of address by [Cardinal Archbishop O'Donnell, Rome] on the occasion of his elevation to the cardinalship, to [members of the Irish community in Rome, Irish pilgrims]. In special appreciation of his new titular church S. Maria della Pace, setting context of the Irish presence in Rome and stressing the strong ties of fidelity between Ireland and the Holy See. Preaching world peace and Christian renewal by obedience to the Pope, highlighting Pius X as 'the Pope of frequent Communion'. Nationally 'we can be great in the things of the mind and of the soul, of intellect, civilization and peace'; the only way to overcome the present lack of unity in faith and in government is through Christ: 'It is only Ireland united that can do justice to herself, and Ireland will not be one unless good will is allowed to reign from shore to shore.' Invoking Ireland's saints (and Blessed Conor), Mary Immaculate, and his predecessors; the honour given to him is a blessing for Ireland.
