Description
Holograph letter from T. Ronayne, R.C. Mission, Onitsha, British West Africa (Nigeria), to Hagan, reporting on their work and asking for confidentiality because of the uncertain conditions. Sketching vicissitudes besetting his and others' project to help the dearth of priests. While Bishop Shanahan had him draft a letter to Cardinal van Rossum in full support of their project he is less than committed; when the 'General' [Superior of the local Holy Ghost Fathers] dies Shanahan is likely to resign at the subsequent chapter. The project is not likely to thrive under these circumstances; further illustrating the sense of uncertainty in the diocese. Emphasising that the mission is utterly under- manned with only 20 men. Emphasising his own commitment to the diocese; asking Hagan to inform Monsignor Pecorari of the situation. Adding emphatically that there is no opposition to them, but that [the Holy Ghost men resent the bishop's independent actions and blame the seculars].
