dc.description | Holograph letter from M.(J. Curran), St. Vibiana Cathedral, Los Angeles (United States of America), to Hagan, about to leave for Chicago via the Grand Canyon. Dr. Cantwell gave him $ 1,000, but the appeal to the San Francisco societies cannot be made until next year. Planning to see Doheny in Washington; commenting on the trial for bribery he is involved in. Further discussing the potential of raising a substantial sum nationally through the Ancient Order of Hibernians, having spoken to Mr. Horan. However, he would need to settle down in any of the big Irish centres for three months during their seasons. Stressing again 'the local demands are immense'. Reporting that 'Jas.J.'[Ryan], when seeing Cantwell and Doheny, did not speak of the Irish College at all. Naming his expenses since arrival as just over $ 800, after travelling 12,500 miles; any income from now will be pure profit. Asking for news; the fact that the Pope contributed to the project was received very positively. Expressing admiration for Cantwell's great organisational drive, matching the 'stupendous' expansion of Los Angeles. He met other [former Romans]; Monsignor Cauley has been very kind. | |
