Gerard F. Yates, S.J. (1907-1979) spent forty years at Georgetown, as Professor of Government, Dean of the Graduate School, director of international student programs, foreign student advisor, and as a long-time member of the Chimes singing group. The field house at Georgetown bears his name. When asked why he became a Jesuit, he replied: "The Order seemed to stand for great things and the spread of God's kingdom at every level. Chivalry was still a reality... when I was a boy, and the Society of Jesus was to me a spiritual chivalry and a disciplined army. I came to see them as men formed in a great school, modeled on a noble pattern; and I thought if I could be that kind of man that they were... there was nothing better I could ask or do in life." The Patrick Healy Award is named for Patrick F. Healy, S.J., who was president of Georgetown University from 1874 to 1882. The first African-American to serve as president of a major American university, he led Georgetown through a period of extensive growth and is credited with changing the university from a small liberal arts college into a modern university. The Patrick Healy Award is given annually to a non-alumnus who continues Fr. Healy's tradition of service to Georgetown.
