An analysis of emotion in two English naturalists' popular scientific narratives
Sudekum, Veronica LaBarge.
Thesis (M.A.)--Georgetown University, 2010.; Includes bibliographical references.; Text (Electronic thesis) in PDF format. This essay concerns how Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace utilize emotional and subjective language in the "Voyage of the Beagle" and "The Malay Archipelago." In these popular texts, Darwin and Wallace present anecdotes of daily life "in the field" while also commenting on the naturalist's "poetic feelings," the epistemological role of imagination, and the wonder and frustrations of pushing the boundaries of scientific knowledge.
