Description
The present day Église Notre-Dame was begun in 1757 by architect Jean-Baptiste Caristie to serve as the chapel for the Jesuit Collège which flourished in Autun during the 18th C. The design of the church facade was inspired by that of Il Gesù (Church of the Holy Name of Jesus) in Rome, the Jesuit mother church. The Collège is now a high school known as Lycée Bonaparte, after Joseph Bonaparte who, along with his brothers Napoleon and Lucien, was among its most famous students.ca. August 1981
