Description
Archbishop Pasquale Macci, archpriest of the Shrine of Santa Maria del Monte commissioned Floriano Bodini (d. 2005) to create the bronze statue of Pope Paul VI shown here. (Santa Maria del Monte is one of the nine sites that make up the Sacro Monti, or Sacred Mountains, in the Piedmont and Lombardy regions of northern Italy.) The work was dedicated in 1986. The artist himself commented on the significance of the huge hands, which emphasize their gestures: one hand blesses, the other warns. Bodoni aimed to invoke Baroque sensibilities with the swirling, exaggerated forms. Figures at the base of the statue (an overturned and empty container, a bouquet of flowers and several sheep are visible in this image) are elements imbued with the artist's own meanings associated with Pope Paul VI.ca.
