Battistero di San Giovanni Baptismal Font, Detail Baptistery of St. John the Baptist Baptismal Font, Detail
Cioffi, Paul L., 1928-2004
Never finished, San Giovanni's octagonal baptismal font was begun in 1187 by an unknown sculptor whose work, though less skilled, seems to be modeled on that of Guglielmo da Modena (Wiligelmo, Italian sculptor active ca. 1099-1120). The font's exterior panels bear low-relief carvings that depict the Baptism of Christ by John the Baptist in the Jordan accompanied by Bishop Ambrose and the twelve apostles. Thomas, Simon, Philip and Matthew are labeled; Peter holds keys, Paul a book and sword and Bartholomew a knife (the figure on the left, perhaps). A low stone pedestal (which has been encased in glass) supports the font. ca. July 1991
