Battistero di San Giovanni, Duomo and Bell Tower Baptistery of St. John the Baptist, Cathedral and Bell Tower
Cioffi, Paul L., 1928-2004
Volterra's 13th C. baptistery faces the duomo, or cathedral, Santa Maria Assunta (dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary), which has a long history. The cathedral was built on the foundations of an earlier church dedicated to Mary, consecrated by Callistus II in 1120, enlarged by Andrea Pisano in 1254 and enlarged yet again in 1576. The baptistery, built in the 13th C., has also undergone numerous modifications. The present dome dates from the 15th C. The bell tower was rebuilt in 1493 after the first one collapsed. ca. December 1986
