dc.descriptionVolterra's baptistery is a two story building constructed on an octagonal plan; it has a high domed roof. Since it was first erected around the middle of the 13th C., it has undergone a number of alterations that reflect the influence of numerous Italian artists. For example, the Romanesque doorway is surmounted with an architrave decorated with sculpted heads carved by an artist close to Nicola Pisano (Italian sculptor and architect, active 1258-1298); and, it is said that Filippo Brunelleschi (Italian architect and sculptor, 1377-1446) offered advice on the baptistery dome. The side of the building facing the cathedral (duomo) is clad in bands of dark green and white marble. ca. December 1986en
