Mrs. Nicholas F. Brady (Genevieve Garvan Brady) was the first woman in the University's history be awarded an honorary degree. The widow of New York financier Nicholas Brady, she had presented Georgetown's Library with a large number of first editions of Johnson, Boswell, Keats and Shelley, as well as the 'Crewe' manuscript of Sheridan's 'The School for Scandal' and Mark Twain's autograph manuscript of 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.'
