Georgetown’s only representative at the 1952 Olympic Games, Capozzoli was named to the All–American Cross Country Team the same year. In Helsinki, he competed in the 5000 meters, an event dominated by Europeans, and finished seventh out of fifteen runners in the Olympic finals. At the end of the Games, he was voted the athlete most representative of the U.S. spirit on the Olympic Squad. During the 1952-1953 season, he won the IC4A Five Mile Run and the NCAA Four Mile Race. In indoor competition, he ran two miles in 8 minutes 55.3 seconds, becoming the first collegian to run the event in under 9 minutes.
