Abstract
Abe Krash worked for Arnold, Fortas & Porter, and assisted Abe Fortas in researching the issues and writing the brief for Gideon v. Wainwright Gideon v. Wainwright 372 U.S. 335 (1963). In the interview, Krash recalls Fortas’ defense strategy, and reflected about the impact of the case as one of the landmark cases of constitutional law in the last fifty years. At the same time, he emphasized that “all of the hopes that we had have not been fulfilled.”

The interview was conducted by Victor Geminiani on March 17, 1993, as part of the NEJL oral history project.
Krash is a graduate of the University of Chicago (B.A.1946); the University of Chicago Law School (J.D. 1949); and he was a graduate fellow at the Yale Law School 1949-50. He is presently a Distinguished Visitor from Practice at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. where he teaches Constitutional Law. Krash was a member of President Johnson’s Commission on Crime in the District of Columbia in 1966-67, and he was President of the Friends of the Law Library of Congress in the 1990s. For many years, he was the head of the anti-trust practice group at Arnold & Porter, and he represented a number of major companies in different kinds of proceedings. He is the author of numerous articles in law reviews and law journals on a variety of subjects. Mr. Krash continues to advocate further reforms to fully realize Gideon’s intent: statewide public defender systems, decriminalization of some crimes, and reexamination by the Supreme Court as to what constitutes adequate counsel. In 2013, Krash received the Lifetime Achievers Award from the American Lawyer’s.
