O'Mahoney, Joseph C. (Joseph Christopher), 1884-1962
Tape 1 of 3. Held in Gaston Hall. Senator Joseph C. O'Mahoney, opens the event and introduces Robert F. Wagner, Jr., Senator Wagner's son, who begins the presentation speech around the 6 minute 29 minute mark by reading a letter from his father. Mr. Wagner is followed by Georgetown President Hunter Guthrie, S.J., who begins his acceptance speech at the 16 minute 34 second mark. President Guthrie references seeing the aftermath of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City, 1911, as a boy and notes that that fire could be said to have "launched Bob Wagner's career as it certainly did my consciousness of social justice in a world of glaring inequalities." Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL George Meany is introduced around the 23 minute mark.
