Prime Minister John A. Costello of Ireland, March 16, 1956. "Ireland Today." Part 2
Costello, John A. (John Aloysius), 1891-1977
Taoiseach John A. Costello concludes the inaugural Edmund A. Walsh Lecture on the topic of "Ireland Today". He addresses Irish foreign policy positions: "We are not an uncommitted country, in the battle of ideas we are firmly committed . . . our neutrality does not spring from indifference to the outcome and we hope to work with you in your Atlantic partnership and in the wider framework of the United Nations organization towards maintaining the peace." His remarks are followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience. Among topics touched on by the questions, the position of the Irish government towards diplomatic relations with the USSR, Irish neutrality during World War II, Northern Ireland, Irish membership of NATO, and government support of the Irish Republican Army (IRA).
