Challenge Deferred Over Abortion Notification Forms
Lancet. 1982 Mar 6; 1(8271): 575-576.
The question of whether Britain's 1967 Abortion Act permits abortions for social reasons has been left unresolved. The government has decided not to prosecute Peter Huntingford and another gynecologist who filled out Department of Health and Social Security (D.H.S.S.) notification forms showing no medical grounds for abortions they performed. Contrary to what the D.H.S.S. maintains, Huntingford and his supporters suspect the forms were recently redesigned for the purpose of narrowing the interpretation of the Abortion Act, which allows abortion to safeguard a woman's mental or physical health.
