The nature and causes of suffering in patients are described, using chemotherapy as an example, and a distinction between suffering and physical distress is drawn. The nature of personhood is explored in terms of the individual factors that make someone what he is and that influence his suffering. Physicians are urged to understand and relieve suffering in their patients, and to recognize that medical intervention sometimes fails to relieve suffering and becomes a source of suffering itself.
