Maternal Bonding in Early Fetal Ultrasound Examinations

New England Journal of Medicine. 1983 Feb 17; 308(7): 392-393.
Having recently interviewed two women who had had ultrasound examinations during the late first or early second trimester of pregnancy, the authors comment on the potential social impact of parental viewing of the early fetus. They speculate that it could strengthen parental attachment to the fetus, become a weapon in the battle over the morality of fetal therapy versus abortion, and affect cultural perceptions of the status of the fetus.
