Abstract
The National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia has established a National Medical Research Ethics Committee that will review and respond to ethical questions from institutional ethics committees and government agencies. The Council will recommend that ethics committees be mandatory in hospitals and universities engaged in medical research. It is expected that these moves will promote uniform requirements for projects and universal acceptance of the Council's guidelines on medical research. (KIE abstract)
