Adding Insult to Injury
Kassirer, Jerome P.
New England Journal of Medicine. 1983 Apr 14; 308(15): 898-901.
To overcome physician dominance and patient acquiescence in decision making, Kassirer proposes the use of decision analysis--the assessment of the probability of each outcome and its utility (value). He contends that physicians assign undue weight to very slight chances of life-threatening consequences. Patients, however, frequently assess the outcome of care based on its effects on quality of life. (KIE abstract)
