Allowing the Debilitated to Die: Facing Our Ethical Choices
New England Journal of Medicine. 1983 Mar 24; 308(12): 716-719.
A physician describes his difficulty in choosing a course of treatment for a feverish nursing home patient, in order to illustrate the painful dilemmas which physicians face when deciding how far to go in treating life-threatening illnesses in patients who are chronically ill. He comments that professional ethicists have not provided sufficient guidance to aid the practicing physician, and that court decisions have been positively confusing. (KIE abstract)
